Executive Bridge Type Selection Committee

Final Downtown Bridge Type Final East End Bridge Type

The Executive Bridge Type Selection Committee made the final decision on which bridge types were selected for the Downtown and East End Bridges. The committee selected the Three-Tower Cable-Stayed bridge type for the Downtown Bridge and the Median-Tower Cable-Stayed Center Cable bridge type for the East End Bridge. The 14-member committee consisted of both elected officials and citizen representatives from Kentucky and Indiana.

The committee met for the first time on November 1, 2006 and decided to solicit additional public comment and votes on the three final bridge type alternatives for both the Downtown and East End Bridges. Voting included both an on-line ballot and written methods facilitated at a series of Open Houses held the week of November 13.

The committee met again on December 12, 2006 and, after discussion of the public input, impacts to historic resources and various cost and engineering elements of the three bridge type alternatives for each bridge, voted unanimously for the final bridge types for each location.

Each section team then moved into the design phase. This phase included additional public involvement. Discussions with the community will focus on aesthetic features such as lighting, colors and textures.
