BRIDGES PROJECT OFFICIALS RESCHEDULE US 42/KY 841 COMPLETION DATE, RE-OPEN US 42
January 2007 -- The projected completion date for the U.S. 42/KY 841 ramp relocation has been rescheduled from Dec. 30, 2006, to Spring 2007. An unusually high amount of rain throughout the fall, which caused work delays, and a scheduled winter shut-down has made it necessary to adjust the project’s completion date.
U.S. 42 has been opened to two lanes in both directions and a flashing beacon has been installed at the intersection with the relocated entrance ramp. These traffic patterns will remain through the winter.
To date, work crews have conducted blasting and rock removal activities – much of which has been completed – and physical relocation of the existing off-ramp has begun. Excavation work is continuing, however, paving and other temperature-dependent activities have been suspended and will resume when weather permits.
The primary objective of the ramp relocation is to clear the way for work on an exploratory tunnel below U.S. 42 that will provide geotechnical information necessary for the design and construction of twin 2,000-foot tunnels that will carry traffic to and from the East End Bridge.
Another important objective is to move the KY 841 - Gene Snyder off-ramp closer to and parallel to the existing on-ramp, creating a single intersection with U.S. 42. The ramp relocation project also includes widening U.S. 42 at the KY 841 intersection and the addition of a traffic signal, which will be synchronized with the signal at Wolf Pen Branch Road. The anticipated benefits include improved driver safety and increased traffic flow through an area that accommodates a significant number of vehicles at peak drive times.
