SNYDER FREEWAY – U.S. 42 INTERCHANGE TO BE SITE OF FIRST WORK IN KENTUCKY EAST END APPROACH AREA

November 2005 -- The realignment of the Snyder Freeway/U.S. 42 interchange will be the first work in the corridor of the Kentucky East End Approach to the planned East End Bridge.  The realignment, which will take about a year to complete, should be finished by mid-2007.  The realignment is necessary to complete the geotechnical investigation for the Kentucky East End Approach.  To gain the required geotechnical information, officials at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet decided to proceed with this work early to help facilitate the ultimate project construction.

Plans call for the off-ramp from I-265 to be rerouted alongside the entrance ramp, and for a traffic light to be added at the interchange.  The realignment will relocate the Snyder exit ramp further west of its current location, making it easier for residents from the nearby Bridgepointe subdivision to enter U.S. 42 from the subdivision’s entrance.  Additional turn lanes will also be constructed on US 42 as part of the project.

After completion of the Snyder/U.S. 42 interchange, the Kentucky East End Approach section design team will begin digging an exploratory tunnel under U.S. 42, which will extend the Snyder Freeway further north.  The Snyder Freeway will gradually descend below current ground level as it approaches the tunnel, which will follow the path of the current Snyder exit ramp and pass under the historic Drumanard Estate.
