Aerial Photography Completed in East End Indiana Approach, Surveying to Begin Soon
June 2005 -- Aerial photography of the East End Indiana Approach, completed
in March, will give engineers a framework for topographical surveying in the area.
The photography covers an area about three miles wide and 10 miles long.
Limited topographical surveying has taken place so that the Indiana Department of
Transportation (INDOT) could begin making right-of-way acquisitions. When INDOT
completes survey contract negotiations - possibly by early July - more extensive
surveying can begin.
With aerial photography completed by March 18, slightly ahead of schedule, engineers
were able to compile an unobstructed overview of the area. "We wanted to get it
done before the trees bloomed, and it was important to get the project site on film
so we could start planning for the survey," explained Scott Sondles, project manager
for Indiana Approach Partners, the engineering group overseeing design work for
the East End Indiana Approach.
Results from the topographical survey will help engineers develop three-dimensional
maps of the area, an important step in determining the bridge approach's profile
and elevation.
When completed, the East End Indiana Approach will feature:
- A new full interchange at Old Salem Road
- Reconstruction of the IN 265/IN 62 interchange in Southern Indiana
