Executive Bridge Type Selection Committee Calls for Public Vote
Officials work toward final bridge type alternatives
November 2006 - The selection of the bridge types for the Ohio River Bridges
project is now entering its final phase. The Executive Bridge Type Selection Committee,
the body assembled to choose the final Downtown and East End Bridge types, met for
the first time Nov. 1 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
Governor Ernie Fletcher, committee co-chairman, said "this is an important process
that should include input from the public." Other committee members agreed. The
14 member committee is made up of elected officials and community leaders from across
Kentucky and Indiana.
The committee is asking for the public to vote on their favorite bridge type alternatives
at each location. Votes may be cast at the Bridges Project Web site
(click here to view bridge type alternatives for the downtown bridge,
or here for the east end bridge).
Four public meetings will be held from Nov. 13 - 17 to further solicit public feedback
The public can also vote by calling Community Transportation Solutions (CTS), the
Bridges Project's general engineering consultant, at 1-800-513-6691, or by writing
to CTS at 305 N. Hurstbourne Parkway, Suite 100, Louisville, KY 40222.
Voting forms also will be available from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the following Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Indiana Department of Transportation offices:
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet - District 5 Office
977 Phillips Lane
Louisville, Ky 40209
Indiana Department of Transportation - Falls City Subdistrict Office
5701 U.S. Highway 131
Clarksville, IN47129
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet - Central Office
200 Mero Street
Frankfort, KY 40622
Public voting will help the committee narrow the list to two alternatives for each
location by the end of this month.
A series of stakeholder meetings and public open houses helped bridge design engineers
and architects narrow an extensive list of alternatives to a total of six, three
alternatives for each location, by July 2006. The members of the Executive Bridge
Type Selection Committee were then invited to lead the final stage of the selection
process.
The committee includes Gov. Ernie Fletcher, Gov. Mitch Daniels, Rep. Anne
Northup, Rep. Mike Sodrel, Mayor Jerry Abramson, Commissioner Ed Meyer,
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert and Indiana
Department of Transportation Thomas Sharp. Those elected officials also
appointed citizen representatives including Fred Mudge, Ned Pfau, Jr.,
Ed Glasscock, Dale Orem, David Karem and Sam Smith.
