East End Bridge AAT/RAC Consider Six Bridge Type Alternatives
View the Bridge Concepts
Step 3 of the Bridge Type Selection Process is underway. Comments on the six bridge type alternatives will be assessed. The design team will use this feedback, along with information about cost, constructability and other factors to narrow down to three alternatives. February 2006 - The East End Bridge design team unveiled six bridge-type alternatives at its Feb. 16 Area Advisory Team/Regional Advisory Committee (AAT/RAC) meeting. Design team members explained that the concepts displayed were based on the AAT/RAC's desire for a slender, visually open structure that blends into the rural-residential setting.
The Feb. 16 meeting introduced the group to Step Three of the Bridge Type Selection Process, in which three alternatives will be chosen. The public will have a chance to view and comment on the six bridge types at Step Three Open Houses March 7 in Utica, Ind., and March 9 in Louisville.
Miguel Rosales, lead architect for the East End Bridge, explained that the six bridge type alternatives incorporated features popular with the AAT/RAC, such as short towers, slender piers and a thin deck. The bridge types presented to the AAT/RAC included one arch, four cable-stayed and a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge.
Ted Grossardt, of the Kentucky Transportation Research Center, led the AAT/RAC in a polling exercise that gauged the group's opinions of the six alternatives based on compatibility with the landscape, showing each concept from multiple viewpoints. Views included aerial, shoreline, pedestrian and driver's perspectives.
The polling exercise included a digital computer simulation of a driver crossing each of the six bridge types, with group members rating the simulated driving experience electronically. The AAT/RAC was also asked to rate the importance of various issues like construction methods, construction costs, aesthetics and maintenance factors.
A question-and-answer session concluded the meeting, giving the group an opportunity to weigh in with additional comments and questions. As in Steps One and Two, all opinions and feedback will be considered as design of the bridge type continues.
