Step 2 of the Bridge Type Selection Process is complete, and comments on the concepts are being assessed. The design team will use this feedback, along with information about cost, constructability and other factors to develop alternatives. To view each of the 15 concepts presented, scroll down.
December 16, 2005 -- The East End Bridge design team displayed 15 concepts for the East End Bridge recently at two community meetings. Those who attended had the opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback about the concepts presented and interact one-on-one with design team members. The meetings were part of Step Two of the four-step Bridge Type Selection process.
During Step Two of the four-step process, bridge designers encourage the public to comment on draft concepts. In Step Three, both bridge teams will use public input on concepts to develop bridge design alternatives.
"We're interested in finding out whether people like a particular concept because it blends in with the river environment, for example, or because it's emblematic of this region. Design aesthetics are more important than determining specific bridge types at this point" said Dan Carrier, project manager for the East End Bridge. "The feedback we gather at open houses is very important because we'll use it to develop detailed designs that reflect what we've heard from the community."
The East End Bridge open houses were held Tuesday, December 13 at the Utica Community Center in Utica, Ind., and Thursday, December 15 in Louisville at the Brownsboro Road Best Western. Attendees reviewed and commented on informational boards, interacted with bridge design team members and took part in polling exercises that helped gauge public interest in the various bridge design concepts presented.
The concepts displayed included variations of three bridge types: cable-stayed, arch and truss. Audience members viewed a series of 15 renderings of bridge concepts, shown in context from shoreline and aerial views.
The polling scores and opinions expressed after the polling exercises will be included with factors such as cost, long-term maintenance and constructability in developing design alternatives.
