AREA ADVISORY TEAMS MEET EAST END BRIDGE DESIGN TEAM
September 2005 -- Area Advisory Team (AAT) members representing the Kentucky East End and Indiana East End Approaches were introduced to the Ohio River Bridges Project's East End Bridge design team in June. The meeting, held at the Utica (Ind.) Community Center, gave AAT members an opportunity to learn about the Bridge Type Selection Process and engage team members and project representatives in discussion of issues such as traffic flow, funding, work timetables and right-of-way acquisitions.
The organizations on the AAT represent key neighborhoods, government agencies and stakeholder groups in the area. Members of the Kentucky and Indiana East End Approach teams will provide feedback on design aesthetics throughout the Bridge Type Selection Process.
Dan Carrier of Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, the section design manager for the East End Bridge, introduced team members John Carr, deputy project manager, and Kathleen Partlow, deputy project manager for Public Involvement.
In addition to project team member introductions, the meeting featured a presentation of various bridge types, and an overview of the four-step Bridge Type Selection Process, including the development of guidelines, development of initial design concepts, development of bridge type alternatives and bridge type selection. Upcoming community involvement meetings were also discussed, and a question-and-answer period followed the presentation.
Advisory team meetings throughout the East End Bridge Type Selection Process will involve members of the Kentucky and Indiana East End Approach Advisory teams and members of the Regional Advisory Committee (RAC). RAC members represent key government agencies, community foundations and economic, business and environmental groups from both Kentucky and Indiana.
It was also announced that bridge types will be selected in about a year. Design work, which will incorporate public feedback, will take a further two years to complete. The design phase for the Downtown and East End Bridges will follow the same process, with the construction phase for both estimated to begin as early as 2007.
