Old Jeffersonville Historic District

These topics and more are covered in the new Historic Preservation Plan (HPP) for the Old Jeffersonville Historic District as developed for the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project. The document is filled with maps, photos and verbiage that depict Jeffersonville from its settlement in 1786 to today's unique and vibrant community.

Want to know where all the current gateways are located? Turn to page 69. Interested in the recommendations for preserving downtown? Check out page 82. Maybe you'd like to go back in time. Turn to page 13 and see the layout of the original Fort Finny. Curious about what businesses were originally located along Spring Street? They're on page 33.

The Old Jeff HPP can be downloaded by visiting the Project's Web site at www.kyinbridges.com/project/history.aspx

"The Old Jeff HPP gives an excellent synopsis of the city's history. It also does a great job of identifying and calling out historic buildings and places. But more importantly it gives the city a document that can help guide future planning and development in a way that enhances and preserves Jeffersonville's rich history," says Jeff Vlach, Environmental Commitments Manager for CTS, the general-engineering contractor for the Bridges Project.

This is the first HPP to be approved and published by the Ohio River Bridges Project. Others that will be forthcoming are:

Butchertown Historic District
Phoenix Hill Historic District
Country Estates of River Road/River Road Corridor
Township of Utica Historic Lime Industry

The Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges project addresses the long-term, cross-river transportation needs for the region. The project calls for rebuilding the Kennedy Interchange (a.k.a. Spaghetti Junction) in downtown Louisville and constructing two new bridges, one in downtown and the other in the East End.
