Topographical survey of eastern Jefferson County bridge approach to begin
Louisville, KY – (Feb. 16, 2005) -- Above-ground surveying for the Kentucky approach
to the easternmost of the two Ohio River bridges now under design in Louisville
is set to begin Feb. 21. Subsurface testing of the area began Feb. 1.
Work crews will spend two or three days the week of Feb. 14 establishing the coordinates
and elevations of fixed points, called project controls, which are used as reference
points to calculate the exact location of other physical features in the area. Utilities,
buildings, trees, roadways and drainage structures are among the features that will
be surveyed and identified for consideration in the final design plans.
Jerry Leslie, project manager for H.W. Lochner, Inc., the engineering firm managing
the Kentucky East End Approach design, said topographical surveying will help determine
where right-of-way acquisitions are needed.
Leslie said Hall-Harmon will begin their work in the area of the U.S. 42 and KY
841 interchange. The survey, which is expected to last several months, will encompass
the entire Kentucky East End Approach area.
The East End Bridge is part of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges
Project (LSIORBP). The project also consists of a new downtown span just east of
the Kennedy Bridge, and a rebuild of the Kennedy Interchange (Spaghetti Junction)
in downtown Louisville. Survey crews are also currently at work in the Kentucky
Downtown Approach area.
