Two Kentucky companies named as engineering and design consultants for Ohio River
Bridges Project
Louisville, Ky. (June 17, 2004) – The Ohio River Bridges moved one step closer to
a reality today when the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced two design consulting
contracts.
A Louisville company, Qk4, Inc., was chosen to provide engineering and design services
for the reconstruction of the Kennedy Interchange to the south of its current location.
This work will include interchanges at I-71/Frankfort Ave., I-64/Mellwood Ave. and
Jefferson St., including the Witherspoon Connector. This contract is for an estimated
fee of $26 million.
H.W. Lochner, Inc., a national company with offices in Lexington, was chosen for
the engineering and design services for the extension of I-265 from I-71 to the
proposed east end bridge. This will include a partial interchange at US 42 and a
2,000 foot tunnel under US 42 and the Drumanard Estate. This contract is for an
estimated fee of $10.8 million.
Both of these contracts will carry the design effort through utility and right of
way plan development and are scheduled to be completed no later than November 2006.
The next step in the project will be the selection of section design consultants
by Indiana, which is expected to be announced this summer. Construction is expected
to begin on the bridges in 2008.
In making the announcement on Louisville’s waterfront, Kentucky Transportation Secretary
Clay Bailey, said “Today marks a major milestone not only for the Louisville community
but indeed for the entire state. This metro area serves as a major economic engine
that drives the state and this project will benefit all Kentuckians.”
