Historic Preservation Advisory Teams
Historic Preservation Advisory Teams (HPATs), which were established by the Section
106 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), work closely with designers and project officials
to ensure that historic buildings, features and the historic character of affected
areas are preserved.
Oversight
HPATs have been active on the project since design work began in Dec. 2003. According
to the MOA, the role of the Kentucky and Indiana Historic Preservation Advisory
Teams (KHPAT and IHPAT) is to "ensure the Project is designed in a manner that respects
the historic qualities, landscapes, historic buildings and features within the Alternative
Specific APE" (Area of Potential Effects).
The KHPAT and IHPAT provide input and make recommendations, which are submitted
to the
Bi-State Historic Consultation Team (BSHCT). The BSHCT, in turn, considers
and determines recommendations to be sent to the Bi-State Management Team for approval.
Both advisory teams are co-chaired by representatives of the State Historic Preservation
Office and State Transportation Agencies.
